Four administration departments and 49 agencies “flagged.”
The Government Accountability Office issued a report on incorrectly reported spending or missing reports on government spending information.
The Departments of Treasury, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Transportation were flagged by the GAO for having multi-billion dollar discrepancies. Forty-nine executive agencies were identified by the GAO as not having reported their spending obligations. Most of the spending issues relate to COVID-19 funds.
The greatest discrepancy in COVID-19 spending came from the Treasury Department. It donated $231.5 billion in COVID spending and only reported $36 billion. The Department of Health and Human Services was second.
“Quality federal spending data are key for Congress, federal managers, and the American public to track taxpayers’ dollars,” the GAO stated in the conclusion of its report. “We found agencies that either did not report spending data or reported inconsistent spending data to USAspending.gov, including for COVID-19 funds. By assigning Treasury the responsibility for determining which agencies should report to USAspending.gov and requiring that agencies report OTA data, Congress can help improve the completeness and usefulness of data on the website for decision-making and accountability purposes.”
